Searching for an apartment can be a very stressful process! Moreso in certain cities as opposed to others. So whether you’re seeking to find apartment to rent in a house or a complex, here are a few tips to consider before signing your name on the dotted line..

Determine your budget

First and foremost, you shouldn’t tour an apartment if you haven’t even determined what your budget is for your monthly rent. Typically the rule of thumb is 30% of your gross monthly income is to be spent on your monthly rent. but we know that that threshold is not really the case in most core markets like Boston, NYC and San Fran. You must have a good idea of your monthly expenses before determining a monthly rental budget.

Research The Property

If you’re choosing to stay at an apartment complex, hop on over to google maps and checkout the reviews! While you’re there, inspect the neighborhood using the 3D view and also the property as well. Most apartment complexes do have reviews on Google Maps and it’s always good to see what the main complaints are to get an idea what the building and neighborhood class you’re dealing with. You want something that has been recently renovated and is well maintained to give you the fewest headaches, but as long as it’s in your budget.

Thick Walls

I’m not sure where you stand, but I’m not the one wanting to ever hear what’s going on next door, upstairs or across the hall! So, it looks like having thin walls won’t cut it for me and I’m thinking for most. There’s nothing more annoying than hearing everything being said or experienced all around you. So make sure you’re very ATTENTIVE to the sounds coming through to your atmosphere while touring.

Understand your Parking situation

If you have a car, you got to have a place to put it! If land is at a premium, most likely you’ll be shelling out more dollars every month to park your vehicle. Depending on the city you’re staying at, some don’t charge for general parking, but do charge for carports.

Utilities included?!

Make sure you understand how the utilities are being charged and paid for. Usually other fees like pet fees are never included in the rent price, so if you have a pet, most likely they’ll charge you for it..

Can you make a Call!?

Well maybe you don’t want your walls TOO THICK! You still got to be able to make phone calls and interact without standing outside for reception. So, when you’re touring make sure you check your phone and see if you have decent reception within the space.

Check EVERYTHING

Last, but not least CHECK EVERYTHING.. Sometimes complexes and landlords will charge you for something that was already damaged before you moved in, but forgot to report. Make sure you check the locks and windows. Check for any leaks or signs of insects. Check the outlets, shower for enough pressure, check that everything is functional etc. After all you will be living there..
